Ovidio Guzman Lopez, son of Joaquin Guzman Loera, the Mexican drug lord popularly known as El Chapo, was captured in Mexico City but freed following pressure on the police from members of the cartel.
The operation resulted in gun battles across the city, with smoke gathering in the air as cartel gunmen patrolled the area in trucks.
President of Mexico, Andres Manual Lopez Obrador, defended the decision to release El Chapo’s son, saying that it was done to save lives.
The capture of one criminal cannot be worth more than the lives of people. This decision was made to protect citizens… You cannot fight fire with fire.Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador – nbcnews.com
The Mexican Security Minister, Alfonso Durazo, said that the country would be pacified without the use of violence and repression.
