Other Side of America
Song by Meek Mill Produced by SHROOM & Butter Beats Album:Released: 5 June 2020
“Otherside of America” reflects on the experiences regarding the continuous violence of law enforcement against African-Americans.
In a CNN interview following his release from prison in 2018, Meek Mill speaks about criminal justice and how it should be reformed:
I grew up in America in a ruthless neighborhood, where we were not protected by the police.
We grew up with people selling drugs on our neighborhood, on our front steps, we grew up on ruthless environments, we grew up around murder. (…)
At 18 years old I was arrested by a narcotics strike force (…) most of these guys were found out to be liers, they lied on the stand. I was arrested by pointing a gun to a strike force (…) without any shots being fired.
The rapper was first arrested in 2007 on gun and drug charges. Since then he’s been on probation. In 2008 he was imprisoned again over seven charges related to guns and drugs. Six years later he was again in prision due to another offence. In the next year, he reached his fourth offense in his probation for “not reporting to his probation officer”.
