“I’m a little rusty, but it doesn’t matter,” Williams, 36, said to the crowd in the main stadium at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. “I’m just out here on this journey and, you know, doing the best I can.”
Her best on Thursday was far from her historic best, but she also gave big hints that the traditional pillars of her game remain intact.
She can still crush groundstrokes, attack returns, strike aces to all four corners of the service box and still bare her teeth and find another gear under duress.
