There are unconfirmed reports that the paramount ruler of Ijebu kingdom, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed on.
The Awujale of Ijebu Land according to sources from the palace died on Sunday, July 30. However, no official announcement has been made yet.
As against the Yoruba tradition, it’s a taboo to announce the death of a king without performing necessary rites. If the reports have any iota of truth, then it’d be recorded that an elephant has fallen as Ọba Adetona would be one of the longest serving traditional ruler in Nigeria.
Adetona, 83, mounted the throne of the Awujale in 1960, then as a young, vibrant and promising youth who was called from abroad to serve his fatherland.
Recall a similar news broke about the death of former Ooni of ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade and the Ooni palace came out to deny it but eventually turned out to be true.
We don’t want to be hasty in our conclusions. But in due time, the news will be confirmed if truly Awujale is dead or not.
