Eediyat Skengman (Stormzy Send)
Song by Wiley Released: 5 January 2020
The beginning of 2020 saw a grime war brewing, but its roots began a year prior. In late 2019, grime artist Dot Rotten began dissing UK rapper JAY1 and UK grime crew Boy Better Know. Dot Rotten released a flurry of disses in the span of a couple of weeks, with one tune dropping once a day or so. Around Christmas, Dot challenged the grime scene to clash him. Though his call initially was left ignored, Wiley picked up the beef and released “Curiosity Killed The Cat” and “Disrespect”. On January 1, grime artist Jaykae also got involved and dropped “SHUSH” which contained disses towards both Wiley and Dot Rotten.
Following Jaykae’s diss, fans tweeted at Wiley asking if he was going to respond. Wiley declined, stating that Jaykae was “with Stormzy and Ed Sheeran”. Wiley had complained previously about how Ed Sheeran was a culture vulture for getting grime artists on recent songs such as “Take Me Back To London” (which featured Jaykae and Stormzy). Wiley also complained about Stormzy making pop music and “using grime”, a stark contrast to earlier compliments he gave Stormzy.
The tweet set off a discussion between Wiley and Stormzy on Twitter, with insults flinging on both sides. The end result is “Eediyat Skengman”, the title of which is a play on Stormzy’s single “Wicked Skengman” (Stormzy also has a knack for calling himself “wicked skengman”).
